There are 1.4 million chronically lonely older people in England, and many more across the rest of the UK. Age UK works to combat this through influencing, campaigning and service provision by our network of 130 local charities in England and partners in Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland. Our work to combat loneliness has become even more urgent since the outbreak of Covid-19. Our information and advice line, and friendship line Silverline have answered hundreds of thousands of calls from older people facing loneliness and anxiety.
Our network provides services to tackle loneliness which include befriending, IT and digital inclusion projects, social activities, transport, lunch clubs and day centres. Many of these services have had to move online or to the telephone in order to comply with social distancing.
