Active Plus is a Community Interest Company that utilises the skills and experience of wounded, injured and sick military veterans to build confidence, unlock potential and inspire change. Our veterans empathise, inspire, challenge and gain respect in a way that is a powerful force for change; both for participants and for the veterans who are on their own journeys and whose health and wellbeing benefit from our ethos of helping ourselves by helping others.
Our Connecting Penzance project aims to prevent and reduce loneliness in the Penzance area.
Funded by the Building Connections Fund and UK Government (Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport) Connecting Penzance will build on our experience and focus on utilising existing services and community spaces to bring people together and help themselves by helping others.
Our aim is to develop individual and community potential and to establish vibrant, inclusive and sustainable hubs that prevent and tackle loneliness and isolation. We understand the importance of a safe place to meet and intend to look intensively at making the best use of existing assets and to help develop their potential to support Penzance and the villages around.
The project will help anyone who may be feeling lonely or isolated to feel more connected to others and we will achieve this by:
- Delivering Active Plus courses, run by military veterans that bring people together, build confidence, communication skills and motivation to help others.
- Link groups into one or more of the community spaces so that they are part of their development into Community hubs and play a key role in determining the opportunities within them.
- Work within the hubs, developing people and teams that can deliver a range of activities and experiences that include people from all walks of life.
Work with Community hubs and partners to ensure they become sustainable and effective resources for the future.
