Age UK Sunderland is a local and independent charity. Our mission is to promote and support the well-being of all older people (aged 50+) throughout the City of Sunderland, improve their quality of life and help them to maintain independence. Including via the following services:
Meaningful Connections: offering one-to one support to older LGBTQ+ to be more connected within the community, reduce feelings of loneliness and promote positive ageing.
Men in BIG Sheds: is a social, learning and wellbeing project for older men in Sunderland. Weekly group sessions held at the North East Land Sea & Air Museum (NELSAM) provide volunteers with the opportunity to learn to restore and renovate the museums artefacts, and meet likeminded people along the way. Men’s Health related workshop are also delivered.
32 Community clubs: providing a safe and enjoyable environment where older people can access a hot lunch, socialise and participate in a range of activities. Clubs provide a comfortable and enjoyable place to come to connect with people and their community on a regular basis.
Pit Yard Group: a social group set up for former Shipyard or Colliery Workers in Sunderland to reconnect with old friends, share stories and socialise with peers.
Activage: delivering a wide range of health based leisure and learning activities for people to develop the skills to maintain their wellbeing and improve their health, in addition to promoting active engagement in their community and social participation.
Social Focus: supporting people who have a mild/moderate mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression or stress and experiencing loneliness. Through one-to-one support older people are able to gain the confidence and self-esteem needed to progress forward.
Keeping in Touch Service: telephone companionship and face to face home visits offering company and a friendly chat to older people who often live alone, are housebound, have days when they see no one.
