The EFL, Sport England and Lottery, have with 12 EFL Clubs set up a scheme designed to engage with retired and semi-retired people (over 55 years) to combat loneliness and inactivity. Launched to coincide with Loneliness awareness week, Extra Time Hubs harness the unique assets of the EFL Club Community Organisations, of which the Foundation of Light is one of the 12, to bring older people together and offer a range of activities to benefit physical as well as mental health.

The Extra Time Hub in Sunderland, is held each week 10-12 noon on Wednesdays at the brand new facility of the Beacon of Light, next to Sunderland AFC Stadium of Light. We offer a space to meet, chat and eat cake! We provide a range of activities from carpet bowls and New Age Kurling, to Seated Exercise and trips out to local Places of Interest. We are very much driven by what the group would like to do or try, for example Ukulele playing and tours of both the Stadium and the Academy of Light.

It is as much about the social side of people coming together with those of a similar age, as it is to get active. We have members with mobility issues, who actively take part in the physical activities as well as just coming along for the social interaction.

The Hubs are run by the Extra Time Activator, who is there to deliver activities, organise the days gathering and encourage the group to organise their own activities outside of the Hub and encourage their friends to come along. Word of mouth is as valuable as any marketing tool.

The Beacon of Light is a Public Building and anyone wanting to come along on Wednesday mornings, only have to come along to the staff at reception to be directed to our wonderful group of people, who welcome any new members with open arms. We laugh and joke, get competitive…sometimes with quizzes and memory games! ‘ Our motto is ‘Say Yes More’, so why not say ‘Yes, I’m going to the Hub on Wednesdays’. You’ll be more than welcome.
